The forestay connects to the eyebolt seen here. The bowsprit is long for aesthetic reasons. The forces from the forestay are balanced with the 'dolphin knocker.'

The dolphin knocker has the added benefit of producing a nice sluicing sound when the boat is under sail and reaches speeds over 3 knots (I have achieved 5kts in this boat.)
