It took almost 3 hours to cross the bay and right as I entered back into the protection of the ICW, a barge came out. He was also trying to stay to windward, and we passed each other at a distance of 50 yards or so. I was terrified - I could have lost 50 yards if anything had gone wrong at all. Jason had just such an event: Just as he entered the ICW, his main sail's clew blew out and he had no control of his boat. If he hadn't washed up on an island, he have been blown back out into the bay and who knows what would have happened.
We pulled into the shelter of the very first island and made some adjustments. The wind was coming more and more from the front - from a direction we could not go.
