We entered San Antonio Bay at 28 12.350N, 096 47.100W and started our 6 mile passage in unprotected waters. The wind was howling and the seas were rough. We HAD to stay on the windward side of the channel and to do so, our speed dropped to about 2.5 miles per hour.
To make sure I was on the windward side of the channel, I'd sail up to the channel markers and slap them with my hand. This took a lot of planning and concentration - and it was pretty dangerous, now that I think about it. I had just slapped a marker when I looked up and saw the Vindaloo captained by Grant Wolf passing me by. He gave me the thumbs up, I gave him the thumbs up, and we continued on.
