"What?" Dylan asked impatiently. "That
hole in her neck? What about it? That doesn't change the fact that
the goat is dead or that we have a farm to run, now does it?"
Paco looked down at the ground.
"Look," Dylan said reassuringly, reaching
out and laying his hand on the other man's shoulder, "This thing,
if it is supposed to be a vampire, it probably attacks at night, right?"
Paco nodded, still not looking Dylan in the face.
"I'll keep watch tonight and one way or another,
this whole thing will be resolved by morning." Dylan turned and
looked back at the carcass of the goat. "Now, can we get back
to work? Let's get this thing out of here."
The day went on more or less normally after that. At
least Dylan didn't hear anything more about the issue until late in
the afternoon, when he looked up and saw the workers herding the sheep
in from the fields. He ran across the barnyard and called out, "Paco!
What's going on? Why are you bringing in the sheep?"
"El Chupacabra roams the night, seƱor," Paco
answered in a tone dripping with disappointment. "You said you
were going to stand watch tonight, to get El Chupacabra. You cannot
watch all the sheep in all the fields, so we brought them all together
to you can watch them all at once."
