This was the shakedown cruise, so we had to plan for something to go wrong. Prior to launch, we had arranged an emergency signal with the guys on shore: If we drop sail, come save us. Weekender sailboats are designed to use a wheel for steering, and I did my best to rig up a good system, but sure enough, the steering failed and we were floating free, being blown towards the lee shore.
