The steeringboard it pretty much just a claw that cups the paddle so I can move it back and forth with only one hand. I inset it into the gunwale because I thought it needed it. While it worked, it takes a lot more effort than a rudder and does not work as well. Also, the paddle likes to float, so you have to force it into the water. I used a small bungee cord to hold it in place. You can also see my moveable seat - another great idea that looked sensible on paper but just sucked in practice. It kept moving around and increased the frustration of sailing.
