I had arrived on Thursday night, chatted with my parents until about 10, then went to work in the garage until about 1am. Most of the time was taken up cutting the stem pieces for the bow, but I must have done other things as well. The next day, I started with attaching the gunwales. I had intended to use 5/8ths inch thick molding for the gunwales, but even that was too stiff given the long swoopy shape of your average Viking boat. I opted for 1/4 inch thick lattice material, not as strong, but it gets the job done, and is quite bendy.

I also cut the board that will act as the Mast Partner, the brace that holds the mast up and down. I cut it out of 2x6 because it needs to be strong. But it is too heavy - heaviest part of the boat, actually, so I am going to redo it - as soon as I figure out what with. This has to be a sturdy piece, because it supports the mast, it is what the mast pushes against to make the boat move, and I will use it as a yoke when I carry the canoe to and from the water.

Anyway, this photo shows the mast partner, seats, and mast step temporarily installed.
