After removing the carpet and padding, you have to remove the bazillion staples that were used to hold the padding in place, then sweep up all the dirt your vacuum had beat under the carpet all those years. A fun game to play is "Did I get all the staples?" where you pull and pull and pull staples until you think you got them all, then ask your partner "Did I get all the staples?" and he comes over and points out 10 or so you missed. This goes on for hours.
