The Imperial City is surrounded by a moat and 10 meter wall. What you see today was mostly done by Yong Le, Ming emperor from 1402 to 1424. One story says he had this place built and then a lot if it burned (hazard when wood is your main construction material and you heat with coal). Afterwards, he invited advisors to tell him what they thought went wrong.
