Click on this picture so you can see it at full size. Those are iron bars driven through the rock to hold it to the mountain behind. This particular rock threatens to break off and if it does, it will nearly block the gorge. That is one heck of a lot of work to go though, but the Chinese aren't fools. I am sure it is the best solution available.
